Dirk Nowitzki - Athletic Roots
Dirk Nowitzki was born in 1979 in Wurzburg, Germany. He came from a very athletic and tall family, with his mom being a former member of the German women's national basketball team and his dad being an international handball player. Dirk didn't start shooting hoops until he was 13, but by the time he turned 16, he was nearly 7 feet tall and had developed into a strong all around basketball player. After leading a team of international junior players to a surprise victory over a US junior team at a tournament in 1998, NBA scouts began to take notice.

Dirk Nowitzki - From Deutschland to Dallas
Dirk Nowitzki was drafted in the first round of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, who immediately traded him to the Dallas Mavericks. After a disappointing rookie season, Nowitzki emergered as a star in 2000 and was named the NBA's most improved player. The following season, Nowitzki averaged 21.8 points per game and led the Mavericks to their first playoff appearance in 11 years. He also became the first member of the Mavs to be named to the All-NBA Team.

Nowitzki was a relatively unknown player from Germany who had never been to America until he participated in the 1998 Nike Hoop Summit in San Antonio. The team trained in Dallas, and one of its assistant coaches was the Mavericks' Donn Nelson, who immediately became infatuated with the kid with the mop of blond hair and the sweet shooting stroke. On draft day, the Celtics held their breath as the Mavericks selected Robert Traylor with the sixth pick. The Celtics celebrated quietly. The team they had identified as their main competition for Nowitzki had passed on him. But then, the Milwaukee Bucks shocked the world by selecting Nowitzki with the No. 9 pick -- one ahead of Boston. The Bucks then turned around and traded the rights to Nowitzki and Pat Garrity to Dallas for the rights to Traylor. and the rest is history!!!
