i know vegans are all for protection and respect of all animals, but i was wondering, can vegans have pets or does that go against what they believe? like can they have a dog that they love to play with, feed well, and make sure it has safe accomodations to move around in, like not just a small cage. cuz it seems to me its ok to have an animal as a pet for enjoyment, but still make sure it is well off. im not vegan btw, i have friends that are, and i was just curious about this

Yes they can have pets, they're not going to eat them.

Animals like cats are obligate carnivores and need meat to live. I know a vegan who has a dog but won't adopt a cat because she does not want to feed any meat to an animal companion. She feeds the dog a vegetarian pet food formula. It seems to work. As far as I know, dogs have a hard time digesting raw veggies or plants. That's why dogs eat grass to purge themselves.

Many vegans have pets. Of course, I know many vegans that wrestle with the issue of dogs and cats being carnivores. There are many soy based foods out there designed for animals, however, these animals thrive on animal based proteins (especially cats!) and soy based proteins are not the best nutrition for these animals causing issues such as diabetes and kidney failure. If a vegan has issues giving their pets animal based proteins, they should stick with pets like birds.

I would think that vegans would have pets just like any other people would, meat eating or otherwise. My son's teacher is a vegan and she has a cat. I don't think that because you eat no meat means that you wouldn't want a pet. We don't have any dogs or cat pets because my hubby is allergic to them. I think that people are either pet people, or not pet people, notwithstanding their eating habits. Just my thoughts, I am not vegan either.
The only thought I would have that they would not want pets is the fact that animals eat meat, but they could always take a supplement like people do.?!

It's completely your choose. If you choose to be a vegan than you have reasons behind it and if you choose to have pets you have reasons for that. I'm not vegan, but I know it's not like a club they can deny you membership to and if they do at least you know you're doing what you feel is right. Now, if you are a member of PETA, they do not support people having animals.

I don't see why that would be a problem. Vegans don't believe in animal cruelty and as long as you are nice to your pet and give them a good home it shouldn't matter. I'm not one so I don't know though.
