Idle means when you are not using the computer and its in standby mode. You can set yahoo messenger and other messengers to let your friends on your list know that you are away from the computer. When your mouse is not moving on the computer and when youre not using your keyboard or anything else on the computer, then you might show up as idle. It lets people know you are afk or away from keyboard.

The word IDLE means:
- being lazy
- not in use / operation
In your case, it means not using the program for a long time, or not using the computer for a lon time

it means that u are away for a really long time doing nothing with your computer and if someone instant messages you then u automatically reply with your away mesage
