The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, lives for a little more than 2 weeks on average. Some other types of flies and wasps live for much shorter times, some for longer.

an average of 3 weeks in decent conditions (depending on the species the fly is, there is one type of fly that only lives for 24 hours I think, like they say above, but then again I could be thinking of a different flying bug).

Hate to rain on some parades, but the Drosophila melanogaster I work with can live upwards of 120 days. It's incredibly variable.

The fly life cycle is composed of four stages: egg, larva (commonly known as a maggot), pupa, adult. The eggs are laid in decaying flesh, animal dung, manure, or pools of stagnant water - whatever has ample food for the larva.
