We tried to modify one once (we didn't try too hard) and found that the hard drive is unique in its plug configuration and I believe the OS is far from any Windows based system. This was probably intentional to keep people from building hacks to play xbox games on PCs and visa versa. We did manage to open the system in linux, but couldn't figure out how to do anything with it.

well you can do the old xboxC thing. which is a program called Xbox Connect and it involved hooking ur xbox up to a computer with internet so you can connect to other LANs over a very very very large space (talking the whole US). thats about it unless ur xbox is modded.....
