In London you will find a huge selection of restaurants with food from all over the world. London is very cosmopolitian.
In a survey recently I think Indian food (curries) came out as being a favorite typical meal in UK now!.
However if you are looking for "traditional" English food in London, then of course Fish and Chips is one, try to go into the suburbs and not to a touristy type fish and chips shop which you will find in Central London.

You could try Pie Mash and Liquor ( a green gravy) from a traditional Pie and Mash shop (you will find a good one in Greenwich) or even JellIied Eels!

Roast Beef with Yorshire pudding can be found in many pubs often on Sundays. (The French nickname for the English is "le Rost beuf" as they assosiate the British with roast beef dinners, we, the English nickname them "the Frogs" as we imagine them to be eating frogs legs!)
Roast lamb with mint sauce is also fairly English.

Cornish pasties are availble in Convent garden and other places and are also an English "take away" which originate from Cornwall.

There's no real 'typical' food in London anymore. I'm sure if you asked a large majority of it's residents thier fave food they'd say indian or something. There are however Fish and Chip shops, not chips as you call them here in USA but thicker fries with deep fried battered fish. If you can find a good one of those it's good. In central london eating out can get very pricey but not always deservedly so. My friend and I when I lived there went for a steak dinner in town and got very ripped off, "Do you want fries with your meal sir" yes cost us an extra 2 pounds....

Contrary to your beliefs the food in the UK is very good, I think its on par with most countries,if not all. But even here the food differs as to whether you live in the North, East, South, or West. I'm a Southerner (London) so I will recommend to you Jellied Eels, or Pie Mash & Liquor. There are many fine Restaurants but I think you will find these can be quite expensive. Steak pudding,Fish & Chips, Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding etc so all I can say is ENJOY. PS. You dont get gravy on your sandwiches. I guess your from the U.S.A so you`ll know what I mean. lol

When asked what food should be considered the national food of England, Prime Minister Tony Blair suggested Chicken Tikka Masala, an Indian dish.

While you can still get "traditional" English food like fish and chips, bubbles and squeak, or shepherd's pie in pubs and restaraunts in London, international cuisine of all types is far more common. From Turkish to Indian to Italian to Greek to Spanish, you can find it all in London- and at far more reasonable prices than you often find in the U.S. For example, if you have a small group and walk down Brick Lane (an area famous for its Indian cuisine), shop owners will literally stand in the street and "haggle" for your business, competing with one another by offering discounts, free wine or appetizers, and other bonuses.

If international food isn't your favorite, you can always find "safe" options like burgers and "chips" (fries) and pizza in most pubs. You'll also find American familiars like McDonalds, Burger King, and KFC.

England is infamous for bad food, but I think that is changing.

The stereotypical food is fish and chips, and pub food, such as bangers (sausages) and mash, as well as a lot of Indian food (lots of expatriates from the former colony live there.) Being a cosmopolitan city, there are lots of places that serve good food that is fresh and healthy.
