Untreated wood can be chipped up into mulch which you can then use in landscaping. As with any fiber based material, over time, the wood chips will break down through the composting process. If the wood is treated (painted, stained, etc.) you don't want to do this. Many of the things we use to make our wood "look good" contain harmful ingredients that you do not want to put in the ground, your garden, etc. This type of wood, unfortunately, should be thrown into a landfill where all of the toxins will be contained.

Usually you have to sand it down. But then you can re-stain it and fit it into a new decor. Yes it can be recycled. Ceilings and floors can be redone. Fire place mantles from old houses can be taken out and refinished and put in new houses, etc.
