Hello. My computer is very slow. I've deleted "Temporary Internet Files" and "unwanted programs and their registries". I have also run virus scans w/ AVG and McAfee. Third, I have run a disk defragmenter and disk cleanup. Even after all this my computer is still slow. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 w/ 512MB of RAM and an 80GB Hard Drive. If anyone has any info on how to speed my computer, its programs (including Internet Explorer), or anything else in relation. Please tell me.

You should probably reinstall Windows. After a while, your registry fills up with crap that it doesn't need. That means you computer runs slower. You can try using a registry cleaning program, but the best thing to do is just reinstall Windows and learn to keep your computer 'clean'.

1. go download memturbo (search it on yahoo search or something to find it. I dont know the URL off the top of my head). This manages your ram and you can scrub your ram and get unwnated stuff off your ram and if you do that then things will run faster.

2. goto start ---> run and type "msconfig". Then goto the startup tab and untick any files or programs that you don't need to start up (if you don't know what the file is try searching it on ur pc and find out what application its from and keep on the lookout. you want to take as many files out as possible.) This speeds up your pc startup and in turn reduces the amount of background processes that run when your pc is on so your pc will have more processing space available to process things.

3. Increase your virtual page file memory. If you do this, then you can run more programs and the pc will use part of your hard disk as RAM. (Right click my computer, click properties, go to advanced tab, hit settings under performance, goto advanced again and change your virtual memory settings. If you have a lot of free space, set this to the max allowed.)

4. Turn off the welcome screen in Windows XP. (control panel, user accounts, change the way users log off and on and turn off welcome screen and fast user switching)

5. If you use bit torrent to share files, use utorrent because its really fast and takes up less memory on your pc.

This is all i can think up. Just keep your pc clean and do the things i did above and you should see an improvement because these are some of the measurements i took.

Use firefox instead of IE, because it's faster. And also, while viruses might slow you down if you have them and its nice to feel safe and protected, but the McAfee that is running in the background is also slowing you down, just like any other application that runs in the background

If you are running windows XP, you could lower your resolution, and more importantly change the style of XP to classic (it will look like windows 2000). That makes you PC faster because it has to deal with less graphics.

Firstly, try to get a registry cleanup. Most of the time, your registry entries contain old info that is no longer true for the current status of your PC. You can get this free software TweakNow from www.download.com to cleanup your registry for optimized performance and speed up your PC's performance.

Secondly, try to get rid of malwares in your PCs. Since you're using Internet Explorer (IE), high chances are you have a lot of malwares in your PC. You can get this free software Lavasoft Ad-Aware from www.download.com to cleanup all the bugs and malwares (different from viruses that you scan from the antivirus softwares) from your PC, enhancing your PC speed a little bit more.

Thirdly, quit using IE to access the Internet. Get Mozilla Firefox browser for free from www.download.com or www.mozilla.com and use it to access the Internet. This is so much more secure and faster compared to the IE browser. In my previous experiences, most of the very-serious virus attacks come from the IE browser in my PC. I’ve switched to using Mozilla Firefox browser since then.

Fourthly, check your PC startup files. Uncheck all the unwanted and unnecessary startup files at MSCONFIG (Go to start, run and type msconfig). This makes your PC to start faster.

Fifthly, check all your files and folders. Delete the ones that are no longer relevant to you. Just cleanup your desktop.

If all these fails, perhaps you could consider upgrading your RAM memory along with your hard disk memory. Perhaps you’re storing very large amounts of data in your PC and you need more memory to sustain your PC. All the best!

I have a computer that had 512 mb and at first it was okay. But then the music started taking up memory. I was left with 364 mb. So then I upgraded to Vista Premium and added 1 GB of RAM. So in total I had 1.3 GB and my computer is FAST now. Loads completely in one minute time! compared to the 3 minutes! so go For it but go big add 512 mb or 1 gb its worth it.

I would try to reformat your hard drive - wipe it clean. If you haven't done it in a year, then I would definitely consider it.

Be sure to back up all important files (pics, videos, music, docs, etc...) and locate all of your programs installation CDs and files before you reformat.

It's easy to reformat with Windows XP or 2000 istallation CD. Let us know if you need help with that

add just a touch of nitrice input to the main CPU, then once you have reached a decent idle speed, turn on the nitrice and watch as your computer reaches speeds of up to 6GHZ!
