your ferret should already be descented if it comes from a pet store. Look in its right ear and if you see little black dots tattooed there the ferret is from Marshall Farms and they always neuter and descent their ferrets before they are sent out.

Has your ferret been spayed/neutered? It most likely is fixed then as well.
What you may be smelling is the musky scent that's natural in ferrets or the odor may be coming from his waste if you are feeding a fish based food.
Keep your potties scooped daily, maybe twice even and wash them out once a week at least. Keep your bedding clean(I use old t-shirts and change them often, hey, they're washable) and wash your hammocks too. And most of all, do NOT bathe your ferret more than absolutely necessary. That's if they are dirty or no more than once a month IF that. The more you bathe them the worse they smell. Bathing strips oils from their fur and dries their skin out. In turn, their musk glands will go into overdrive to replace the oils, hence more stink in less time.
Keep the room he's in well ventilated too. I'm also using a Febreze Noticable, but it is a very large room and it's on the other end of that room, not close to the cage. That way it won't irritate their respiratory systems. I have four ferrets now and I cannot say that you can't smell them at all, but they do NOT stink. I take a survey every time someone new comes in the house just to make sure.

Call two or three veterinarians in your area, you get the numbers from the yellow pages. That way you have a really good idea of a couple of places to go. Cheaper isn't always better. Consider what each place offers for the money they charge and ask how many times they have done this surgery. Find out if they see ferrets on a day to day basis. If not, consider someone else, they don't have the experience you are looking for for your little pet.
Good luck.

most ferrets are sold decented it is illegal to sell them in the US if they arent descented and fixed. Otherwise it would lead to over population because they breed like rabbits. Check the inside of the ear if they are an older ferret if there are 2 small dots then they are fixed, but for younger ferrets they dont tattoo anymore. Ferrets still stink even after they are descented I have 2 and they both stink! But I love em anyways.

I had one descented and neutered and had his shots about 4 years ago. It cost me just over $100. Usually the cost runs real close to that of a cat neuter. Just call around. Not every vet sees ferretts and should have some experience with them.
