Your water isn't guaranteed to break when you first start labor. It's actually quite rare anymore that a persons water breaks on it's own. Women are usually already at the hospital because of the contractions so the doctor breaks it to get things moving along. You will know you are in labor when you start feeling a tightness in your stomach and/or back - I had back labor with both my kids. The pain will come in regular intervals. Some people have extreme cramps others have menstrual cramp like contractions it all depends on the person. For me when my water breaks I go immediately into hard labor. Doctor broke mine the first time - took 3 hours for my son to be born after that and mine exploded the second time as I was trying to climb onto the delivery table - she was born 10 mins later :)!

Good luck ... it's different for everyone. Congrats.

"You will leak pale, straw coloured fluid (which won't run dry because it continues to be produced until delivery, replacing itself every three hours). You are more likelu to notice the leaking while you are lying down; it usually stops, or at least slows, when you stand up or sit down, since the baby's head acts as a cork, blocking the flow temporarily. The leakage is heavier - whether you're sitting or standing - if the break in the membranes is down near the cervix than if it is higher up.

Your practitioner has probably given you instructions on what to do and when to call if your water breaks. Follow these instructions. As always, if you're not sure what to do, err on the side of caution and call your practitioner"1

"The membranes of the amniotic sac may rupture painlessly at any time during labour, although this usually happens towards the end of the first stage and the site of the break and whether or not the baby's head is plugging the hole.

Usually, if the membranes rupture spontaneously near term, labour follows within a short time, although occasionally it's delayed - ifyour baby's presenting part is not engaged, or if your baby is presenting abnormally. Delay also occurs in normal cases. When this happens, you'll be advised to have labour induced.

peeing.... that you can't stop
Not everyones labor starts when their water breaks. My water never broke. I just had labor pains. When they got unbearable I went to the doctor.
Both of my boy's births were like that. I only know about your question cause my friends water broke two days ago. I never having expeirenced this HAD to ask her the same question you asked. She also said that with every contraction a little more would come out.
I hope this helps.

With my first pregnancy, mine didn't break on its own...it was done by a doctor at the hospital. (It's almost never like you see in the movies where women say, "Oops!" and you see gushing water.) I mean, that does happen, but not very often. :)

My older son was very low when they broke my water, and his head was blocking the opening of my cervix, so all I had was a trickle when I stood up after they broke my bag of water. Imagine being on your period on a heavy flow day, and not using tampons...only pads. You know how sometimes you can feel the blood, very warm, trickling down your vagina? That's exactly what it felt like for me.

When my water broke it just came in little spurts with each contraction. It feels like a lot of fluid has just gathered in your vigi na. And then it leaks out into your panties. I wasn't even hurting yet. I have had 3 kids and each one of my labors were different. Trust me , don't worry and when your time comes you will know.

I was already in the hospital before my water broke - both times. i was lucky. Both births were 3-4 hours long from the first contraction to the last. However, when they broke it on the table, it felt like pee.

you'll know if your water breaks. you can actually feel it pop, and then of course you wet your pants, in which it does not stop and there is no controlling it. it feels exactly like a water balloon if you put it under your shirt and pop it!
