it is LOUD, and even if your house isn't damaged, everything is vibrating.

It sounds a lot like a train going by right outside your window.

And afterward, there are tree limbs and odd things lying everywhere.

Perhaps- there was no funnel visible but that was because you could only see a few feet. It was around 1975, in Austin , Texas. I was in my new 1974 Camaro LT, Eastbound, and approaching S.Lamar on Loop 360. Suddenly the hail started and the wind picked up. As I reached the overpass above Lamar, The whole bridge was shaking and It seemed likely it would fail. There were cars ahead of us that had stopped-probably terrified. The station wagon right in front of me would not go on-I honked the horn. His car began blowing sideways by the fierce winds. After what seemed like an eternity, he began moving again. I thought perhaps he had decided that the bridge was going to fail. Crawling along Ben White , we reached a Texaco gas Station, where we all took shelter in the tire room. for several minutes, the wind roared and the building shook, but then the winds slowed and we all came out to look at the aftermath. Not a single sign or window that was exposed to the wind was intact. All up and down Ben White there were only frames for the elevated signs. There was hail and sleet piled up to knee height along the building faces. The car that hadn't wanted to move had it's windshield smashed by hailstones-I found that his had occurred when we were still on the bridge. Probably several small tornadoes. We all considered ourselves very lucky and I wrote a nice letter to Texaco corporate headquarters praising the heroes who sheltered us.
On another occasion, I was alone at my folks houe when there was a severe weather alert and tornado watch out It was night. There was hail and high winds that shook the house . Then there was a very loud roaring and the house was shaking and I thought the roof was going to go. Then a crack and thump and the very loud roar died away. When I went out the next morning, the top half of the huge live oak was lying in the hole we had dug for the swimmong pool. Bothe severed ends were twisted, as if God's hand had just reached down and tristed the tree in two.

My best description is that it is similar to opening a dam and letting the water rush out except it is wind. It just knocks down everything in its path. It destroyed a small park about a block away from my house. It seemed like every tree was knocked down.

Sounds like a freight train really close to your house. I was in a hurricane/tornado and that was pretty frightening.

I have. It was scary. my mom was not home and I was watching my godchild and her sisters.

I do not remember the train noise but my best friends does. Also, the sky got yellow, then green. then we ran inside.

When it was all over and done with we did not have power in our home for 3 days. I actually set the bathroom on fire trying to get ready by candle light.
