That is a very thoughtful question, and it's pretty hard to answer. In my belief, art is something very beautiful and soul-deep, something of a human's creation. A shrub is a piece of art; if you believe, God is an artist. If you make a book, you're an artist... except people will call you an author. I think, everything is art. Not just paintings. Not just pottery, not any of those things. A person who reaches into the human soul and nature, who expresses beliefs through paintings, expression of speech, etc... one is an artist. I know that is sort of confusing and strange, but that is what I believe. You are an artist, too. Everyone are artists. But, the most general definition of artist is one who makes paintings. The artist in my opinion, means creator.

That's a tuffy.
People still can't get in accord when it comes to defining art.
In my perspective, one creates art when the basic techniques of the practice are mastered. Many people think that art cannot be encased into a definition. I think it can. It all has to do with the stages of learning something.
First, when one learns something, familiarization is the initial step. At this stage only reproduction is possible.
The next step is production. What has been learnt can be applied to new situations to produce congruent results.
Finally comes creation. This is the ultimate stage of learning. From here one can use the whole of what one has learnt and create new things. This is art.
In other words, art is a manipulation of a series of abilities and thus something unique is creative.
Many think that art is just something unique and outthere....Still in art there is congruency and a system at work.

My definition of art is "anything in a frame" - such as Andy Warhol putting a Campbell's soup can in a frame. When someone does that, it invites the viewer to look at an everyday object in a new and abstract way - like a cylinder with red, white and gold designs. Theoretically, anything that is presented out of its environment for public consideration can be considered art. That doesn't make it good art, just a basic artistic statement. Also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There's lots of things I think are "bad" art that I don't get at all, yet they get displayed in galleries and museums. When a work of art is termed "great" it's because most people admire it plus it gets critical acclaim - like the Mona Lisa.
