In order to be considered legal and allow a play to stand if a batter reaches first base safely on a hit, how many feet must the batter have had on the ground in the batters box as he hit the fair ball.

Tricky!

Not tricky at all.

Here is the Umpires answer.

None.

Before the pitch he must have both feet entirely within the box. He must not contact the ball (while swinging) with either foot completly out of the box. He does not have to have them "on the ground" in the box, only iwithin (or partially within) the box.

Sure would be hard to jump up with both feet and get a hit, but it would be legal.

The batter must begin with both feet in the batter's box prior to the swing. When contact is made, the batter usually has both feet on the ground WITHIN the batter's box [I've never seen someone hit the ball balanced on one leg or with both feet off the ground!]. The front foot [or the back foot] may not be outside the batter's box and the batter may not have their foot on the plate when contact is made with the ball.

None. He just can't have one completely outside the batter's box.

One, the back one. The front one will be up in his swing.
