we are greedy because this world feels like a competition, survival of the fittest. Our environment influences us greatly and the mere fact that we are competing with a billion other people on earth unconsciously makes us greedy.
we don't think of what we have because it's already there. if we think of what we have, we're wasting our time and it makes no sense. You know what I mean? For example, if we have nice clothes, it makes no sense to ask ourselves or contemplate when we already have it. Why ask yourself that you are wearing good clothes?
People say that we take for granted what we have. It's really human nature to not ask what we already know,
we're not born consciously greedy.

Because the human struggle is for pleasure; a form of self observation of habit, a mechanical way of our nature.
We have more than one ( i ) & when one gets greedy it may be because getting what we want does not come by itself, so our i needs to aquire more & more. Humans are connected to wants,
if humans could live in a simple way they would learn how to appreciate what they have.
To break habit one must have originality, if humans could assimilate experiences without greed maybe humans would create a stable pattern of our way in natures garden.
Then we could all just hug each other instead of giving each other material things which in the long run, mean nothing.
An embrace form another human carries more power than achievements of wants. Many rich people can be very sad inside their hearts, because what they have gathered from life with things does not fullfill their essense of who they truly are..
Greed is like jealousy, a mechanical emotion of desire.
Where both greed & jealousy need too much attention and can destroy the self from being at one with themselves and natures ways.

Dear Rachel,
Our educational system teaches us the technical and social skills we need to sustain a material life. As adults we are thrust into a society geared towards materialism and we think that getting more stuff will make us happy. But, the human being is also a spiritual person. The good news is that you are looking for a philosophy of life and inner peace that comes from understanding the nature of the universe and your relationship to it.Once you achieve this...you will not care for money, or unnecessary material things anymore. Your life will change and you will get peace of mind. I hope you agree with my answer Lenny- lvalfaro@yahoo.com

Everyone has been greedy more than once in their lives...it's in all our genes-envy,hunger,desire,
insecurity,lust,the want for more
power/money/wealth,etc...
all of which is the focal point of greed.Even the most minuscule of things which one wouldn't think of as being greedy is considered some sort of greed. For instance, some of us that play on answers know we have priorities much greater than helping others on here...yet,we procrastinate/prolong other things that need to be done...instead,we answer/vote to get more points, desire to get more best answers, try to get more attention from whomever, ask more questions for whatever reasons,etc...what more when the rewards are greater?Human nature will make greed cross our minds but it's up to us to act on it or not.It is only when we become overly inconsiderate & selfish that the greed gets out of hand-making one struggle for more...for no good reasons...but only greed!

The people you speak of, frequently quite a few of us, are getting trapped in this vicious circle and remain unsatisfied regardless of what they achieve. The circle begins with a desire of want rather than need. If we are lucky to get the object of our desire then we learn that it is not what we need and search continues. Fortunately for most of us this circle gets broken either by diversion or by enlightenment.
Are you asleep yet?
Well...,
At least it is one perspective on this issue what do I know :)?
I think the only thing we need is love…
Love is good, maybe a condo also… well a slick ride would nice…some good sushi….

As you get all the things you thought you wanted, you realise that you do not need them. I've had it all and given it up, all i want now is enough and a soul mate, that perfect girl 4ever. Even wanting perfection in a soul mate is greedy, i have lowered my expectations over the years and lost all greed. A simple life, that girl, nice house, reliable car, and enough money to pay ones way. That's what I've become and it feels real and right. Tony in Isan.

Probably insecurity. Most of us want to be better than we are, and for some reason in a lot of cases this means either (a) making other people worse or (b) getting more stuff so we can brag about it to those who don't have it. I don't know why people think this is a viable way of accomplishing self-improvement, but no one ever said humans make sense.

What's the point of thinking about it when you already have it? Isn't that how we got it in the first place?
And yes, not all things are permant, things perish, or we use them up as energy, and so we must still seek more to maintain.
But for those things we have that are permanent, if you're still seeking more of what you don't really need, then that's more of an addiction, and the person should question him or herself to notice the problem at hand.

We are never satisfied. We know deep down that we can have, that we can create, whatever we want.
Usually it is deciding what we want that is harder than getting what we want. If we could pinpoint the things we really desire to make us happy, we wouldn't just go after everything. - thus greedy

back in the day, we used to have to struggle for food and shelter. And now that we have these things right in front of us, we still hold the instinct to be greedy.
The human race will never be pleased!
