Yes, his mutation was unlimited regenerative power (that's why he heals so quickly and that's why he was able to withstand that operation.)

Mutants according to Marvel Comics have the mutan gene within them from birth. It doesn't always manifest right away, sometimes taking several years to do so.
Wolverine was indeed a mutant before he received his adamantium claws.
In-fact, that is the only way he could survive the opperation, his mutant healing factor allowed it to be done. His other mutant powers include super human senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch). He ages very slowly, and may well be over 100 years old. He is also cappable of going into a "berserker rage".
But whether or not this is part of his mutant powers is debateable.

To answer your question, yes, Wolverine possessed animal-keen senses and reflexes and a healing factor that allows him to recover almost instantaneously from virtually any wound and bone claws before the mutant x process which gave him the metal skeleton

Metal was just put into him. But he already had the ability to heal. God, I hate X-men and yet I know this... How sad for me. That's what I get when my best friend is an Xmen fanatic....

Yes, he was able to heal by himself and that why they chose him for the operation. That's according to the movie I don't know if the comic has another storyline.

Yes. He already had the claws, but the people who put the metal in just reinforced his claws (that he already had) with metal.
