NO ITS NOT SAFE!
1) This causes dehydration in the mother and will cause constipation later. Dehydration is dangerous to both mother and baby for obvious reasons.
2) The castor oil can cross the placental barrier and the baby may have a bowel movement called meconium inside the womb. Meconium is thick tarry and toxic. You do not want that because the baby may aspirate it (inhale it) and clog up the lungs. Nobody wants to have a baby staying in the hospital for a long time.
PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIEND NOT TO TAKE CASTOR OIL!

absolutely NOT! please tell your friend to not take castor oil to induce labor. i know a lot of people on here answered it was safe or just an old wives tale but it actually can cause a woman to go into labor and it causes SEVERE diarrhea. trust me-i've seen it. i'm a nurse on a birthing unit and it is awful! the woman that came in was pooping all over the room, the bed, floor, herself, and the baby. plus it can cause too rapid labor which causes fetal distress (which if it gets bad enough could require a c-section to save the baby.) if you or your friend want to have your baby before it decides it's done cooking, please talk to your doctor. with your friend being 39 weeks she should ask her doctor about an elective induction.

no its not safe its just a laxative, the dose for it to be a uterine stimulant is above the toxic level...
actually its not safe to induce early at all
when the baby is developed its lungs to a point it begins releasing a hormone that makes mom go into labor (so if your not in labor your baby isn't ready to be born yet, wait a few more weeks it will happen)

It wont make you go into labor. It will make you go into the bathroom for several hours.
Walking is the best way to get the labor muscles going. But honestly, it is just a diversion tactic.
You will not go into labor until your body is ready. And aside from drugs, you'tt just have to wait. Get a good book! Try the Bible.

Tell your friend that her baby will come when it's good and ready. If you want to help speed it up a bit, yes, sex is a good way to help bring on labour. Also lots of walking. Please tell her not to allow the doctor to induce her if she and the baby are thriving. There are many negative side effects to that procedure and it should only be used in a medical situation i.e. pregnancy induced hypertension to name one. Tell her to be patient. For she will have the rest of her life to enjoy her little miracle. A day or two or even a week or two extra will not harm anyone.

Now there's a nice graphic image! In labor with greasy diarrhea!
The cramping of the diarrhea may help begin labor, but walking would probably help more, be better for Mom and definitely better for the doctor who gets to catch whatever she is pitching!

It is safe. If the baby is ready you will go into labor. If not it's just a good laxative. I tried it when I was past my due date. I wasn't ready but it sure flushed me out. I don't advise it. Caster Oil is thick. I wanted to vomit it up. It is very nasty going down.

It is safe, but it's is an old wive's tale that it will make you go in labor. Go walking and maybe that will help. Good luck and congrats.

it can cause horrible diarrhea, it is a home remedy everyone suggested it to me don't know anyone who actually used it though, a good massage therapist can rub your ankles a certain way which will cause you to go into labor in a matter of mins...there is a well known pressure point in that area of the body.....also black cohosh...and lots of orgasms...
