Merengue and cha-cha were easiest to learn, so I find myself slipping back into that if I'm out dancing in a club. Swing and jitterbug are fun to watch but oh so hard to learn....tango and argentine tango are hot, hot, hot....but I also remember how proud I felt when I finished a really fast foxtrot.

Actually not ballroom dancing, but a precursor to one of its forms: Tango, and I mean the authentic one as danced in Buenos Aires.

Early last century when tango dancers introduced this grassroot performing art back into their countries of ancestry, the dance did not fit into the European concept of what a dance was, and Europe radically revised the expression to the point of introducing the superfluous percussion, and eviscerating the whole spirit of tango. And this perception persists and gets transmitted to the East, particularly pre-Communist China. The effect is more pronounced now that China's contact with the West has increased in the recent decades, and the older generation is taking up social dancing again, a popular pastime during their youth.

When I hear a recording of ballroom tango music I find it downright nauseating.
