I daresay the official definition is "having been born in England".
There you go. Patriotism is for idiots.

It's a great question. I know of know other country that has made such a historical and economic impact globally that actually has no culture of it's own. Conequently, how can anyone define themelves as English. The English do not celebate a National day or have any distinguishing cultural attributes. England to most people in England is not a nation, it is a football team.

An English person is anyone who has lived in the country long enough to embrace the culture and respect the ways of our forefathers (as you put it). Who speaks English, supports our sports teams, is patriotic, and eats Fish & Chips (!)
Being British has NOTHING to do with skin colour, partly due to the fact that the British colonised so many countries in the past, that it can no longer be seen as a *white* nation....and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

My father was from Wales, my mother from England her parents originally we think from Holland... I'm British, the langauge I speak is English... being British is a full time occupation we have to be charming, witty, reserved with a stiff upper lip... actually we are not like the sterotype at all, well not these days but I still open doors for women and let them go first... my dad told me to...

Those bloody Brits keep calling them selves English and most do not know that there is no country or state with that name officially. When are you Brits going to make England a real name.
