Humans can suffice without lips. So, the question is, why do we have lips??

Have you noticed some lips are sensuous and attracts the opposite sex?? That's the main reason for lips.

Lips are actually the replication of the labia (lips of vagina), which is the symbol of sexuality. Hence ppl are attracted by nice, full lips.

This brings us to the subject of kissing. Hahaha!!

Lips also help in certain things, like blowing trumpet (sound is produced by vibration of lips), for articulating some words like 'm'.

Hope this helps. :D

I think it's intersting that many people anwser this question with "to kiss". I think most mammals have lips, yet how many of them kiss like humans do?

The lips are just another type of bodily opening. They have a circular ring of muscles around them enabling us to make a variety sounds and facial motions.

They are also one of the few places that have no oil glands!

Lips make human speech more versitile, they are more expressive than a horizontal slit would be (important for social anmimals like us).

They also change size and color when we're sexually aroused.
That's women try to make their lips look larger and brighter than they really are with makeup.

So that when we can close our mouths our lips "seal" together.

Without lips, our mouths would just be open little holes with cut off flaps and we would always have bugs flying into our mouth and we couldn't do anything about it.

That wouldn't be very fun now, would it? :-P

Also...Lips are good for kissing. :-)

That's a good question. I think it's one of those things from Darwin's theory of evolution. Perhaps we acquired this 'trait' when we developed the expression of love. Who knows! It certainly is an interesting topic of discussion. Have a nice day!

We have lips because WE ARE NOT CHICKENS. Chickens don't have lips. I'd rather kiss a woman than a chicken, anyday. What about you?

Since we are mammals and are suppose to nourish ourselves from mammary glands (bottles with nipples), nature provided us with lips to aid in this sucking process. As we develop their function changes to help us adapt to our environment.
