I always thought it should be tendy-one, tendy-two, etc...

Say it however you like. Be a trendsetter. Every word in the English language had to start someplace with someone.

1. It wouldn't rhyme with seven and then 7/11 would have to think of a better name.

2. The same reason 12 isn't onety-two.

3. Aliens. Aliens are responsible for everything.

This is more of a linguistic question than a math question. In Arabic for instance the name of 11 is derived from the name for 1 and the name for 10. In English the name elevin is derived from a Hebrew word Levi originally meaning "match" (I don't know to what extent this may be contested as far as translation goes). The "match" refers to the duplication of the digit, it is the first number which has a duplicated digit, thus matching. The name Levi originate from Leigha naming her son just prior to 2,000 BC. There are actually many Anglo Saxon words borrowed from Hebrew still in English, but that opinion is very controversial these days.

You dolt everyone knows, 11 is one-teen and not onety one. It is an easy mistake to make though, so you'll have to stand corrected.

1. That's not a good question. I haven't heard that question since I left elementary school. Not to mention it's been asked before.

2. English is not a simple language and its counting system is far from predictable and easy (such as it is in Japanese, save one or two exceptions). It's a language filled with exceptions that must be memorized in order to confound foreigners and give bigots even more of a reason to laugh.

Why isn't twelve, onety two? That's a moronic and idiotic thought to have, congratulations.

Because onety one (when compared to eleven) sounds incredibly asinine.

the numbers 1 through 12 are named because ancient numeric systems were 1-12 and not 1-10 like modern systems.

Because 'eleven' sounds better then onety one.
