OK, I'm sorry that noone here knows anything about this engine. The dohc has a hydraulic dampener on the front cam sprocket. You have to load the dampener and put a pin into the back side of the head to hold that cam in place. THEN, you can put your timing belt on. Remove the pin....gently and holding the sprocket.....and allow the dampener to unload. Then check your timing again. I know, it's a real pain. The one thing I hate about dohc is the dampeners. Buy a subaru and forget about it.

There is no adjustment.
The computer uses the crank position sensor to know where the piston is and fires the coil for that cylinder directly. There is no distributor. Here is the note out of my service manual.
Note: On all models with distributorless ignition, manufacturer does not recommend checking ignition timing, as faulty readings are common and timing is not adjustable.

The best way to set the timing on any Escort is to park it under a big crane that is holding about a 1500# weight get out and have the operator let the brake go and crush it.

You can't adjust the ignition timing on computer-controlled, late model cars...it's handled by the computer.
