I know I'm doing this backwards, but I've seen the movie and now I'm going to read the book. So is the book as good or better than the movie?

It's really hard to say because number 1: It was never supposed to be a movie and the movie was made without Douglas Adams so it many ways it was disappointing if you read the books first...if you want my opinion you did it the right way.

number 2: It was never meant to be a book. Douglas Adams created the radio show and that I highly recommend it is amazing..also BBC did a television series which is also pretty good. But anyway the books are amazing but if you're a stickler for detail and descriptions you won't really find them since doing a radio show you don't need all of that.

In short the books are amazing and I love them but they are not to be analyzed like great works of fiction they are meant simply as fun reading.

And the radio show is the biggest laugh you will ever get so I really suggest trying to find that if you love the movie and if you love the books once you've read them.

If I recall right, The Guide got it's start as a BBC radio series in the late 1970's. Soon after, Adams turned his radio script into a novel - four sequels would follow. Over the years, The Guide has been translated into just about every media possible, including a BBC television miniseries, a computer game, records and tapes, a play, and comic books. Each is a bit different, but add to the whole.
The recent film adaptation more or less follows the plot of the novel, but features some bits Adams himself wrote into the script before he died. These include the character Humma Kavula, the Vogan planet and the deeper relationship between Arthur and Trillian.
I recall liking the film but finding it a bit off because I was so used to the book, radio and TV versions. One of the main problem is film relies more on visual gags, so many of the dailog and and narrative jokes that worked well on radio or in the longer mini-series were dropped.
I highly suggest you try to find the BBC mini-series (Available on DVD) and the radio show (harder to find..but out there).

The movie was great, but the books are better (in many aspects). The writing takes a little getting used to though. Same sense of humor. Enjoy!

I loved the first book. The others, a little less so, but they're still good. Adams' wit and timing is great. The movie was good, but the book is 100x better.

Anyways, the books are short. You can read one pretty quick.
