At least you must smile and I bet that everyone in the world know the meaning of the "Hello", so just say Hello and always try to keep dictionary when you go to the foreign country, so you can know what to say when you meet people. That was a good quesiton.

I have found that most people in most foreign countries understand enough English to get that far. The rest you can do with sign language and a little of their language.

Most people travel and don't know the native language. You can either gesture, get a translator, or go to a place that is bilingual and can also speak English.
