The answer is quite simple. The majority of people still aren't accepting of inter-racial relationships. Though it may be 2006, people are still living from the time era where it was completely unacceptable and people were murdered over it. People simply haven't gotten used to it yet and that much time hasn't really passed. Social issues are the longest term problems to take care of. Asking that is like asking why people still don't accept gay or lesbian couples. Some people just beleive it's wrong. Not saying any of this is my belief mind you.... but fact of the matter is those sort of beliefs and standards were passed down through generations. Evolution is slow especially societal evolution. It's becomming more and more accepted though. The reactions people have towards it today are nowhere near as bad as they used to be. I think probably what causes the most friction with it being accepted is when you get certain people of one race who refuse to date anyone else except for a certain other race like say for example a white cauccasian girl who will only date black men....that's basicaly self discrimination against her own race as far as society is concerned. I'm just giving examples so don't hold any of it as my own personal beliefs.

The main reason is the environments we live in. Many people in the urban and downtown areas are more tolerant of multiple cultures, so this makes interracial dating more acceptable.
"Your white, she's asian? Hey, as along as you two are happy, I don't give a sh**."
In the rural areas, however, many people share one ideaology , and sometimes ethnincty, in their location. In these areas, interracial dating is frowned upon by the majority.
"Your white, she's asian? HOLY S*** (and other negative comments) !!!!!
My point: interracial dating is never negative, in fact it's the opposite. The only problem is the amount of ignorance in the area a mixed-couple lives in. In one place, it's not an issue. In another, it's a taboo trend.
I have no objection to dating outside of my race. It's love at its finest. I encourage any singles reading this to take a chance. You just might come across a man or woman that'll redefine your aspect of "love".

Because one fool says something and everyone feels the need to fit and not think for themselves. I call them neanderthals...but i also think it's dealing with the immigration bit too. My parents have been gettin alot of stares lately when they are together. Dad is mexican and mom is white. But it doesn't bother them. They already went through their racial ignorance of hell through my mom's family when they got married. If ppl want to see how an interracial marriage can last..they can scop out my parents. At least they have been married for 30 yrs and have not jumped on the wagon for divorce like some non interracial couples....

Because people fear change and to see someone who experiences life in a different way than everyone else, makes others weirded out. People dont' like seeing different people - it makes the traditional way of life a little different. Traditionalism is slowly going out and there are people who still embrace life in the past. They aren't used to it yet.
I'm all for equality and interracial relationships - after all, how does one help who they fall in love with? You can't...

Because it is weird. As you say, 40 years have passed and still only a handful of people have relationships like that? At least white people will do a double take and then shrug. Blacks and hispanics will openly stare at you with hostility and say nasty things to you. Occassionally, they will try to assault you.
That should tell you something.

People are afraid of change. I think that the older generation is still biased. I think and hope by the time my kids are my age that it isn't seen as anything odd or not normal. I have taught my kids that it isn't. That's where the changes really need to be in teaching our kids.

People will stare at anybody.....people with handicaps, people dressed out of the norm, and people who don't meet their definition of the norm. I'm afraid this will be as true in 2506 as it is in 2006.

I do not know why either, but we have other issues to worry about than interracial relationships.

People still have racial stereotypes, fueled by comedy shows, and sitcoms. People can't ignore racial stereotypes and this causes them to be suprised when they see an interacial couple.

Because people always fear differences and skin color is considered a difference. At least there is no inter-species couples (yet).
