He's not leaving MS... he's still the main man / leading chairman. He's just stepping away from the day-to-day Management n' stuff. Gates is probably not the best leader or manager. He has found significant success by finding people very good at those functions and putting their talents to use. Of course, everything went through Gates for approval, but most of the dirty work was done by someone else anyway. I don't see much changing, from a company perspective.

Short answer: nope

Microsoft is a very solid software company. When Bill Gates steps down from the daily operation work, he still remains as a Chairman. This will have very little impact on US economy.

Let's see, Bill Gates gave us TWO YEARS notice. That should be enough time to whip Steve Ballmer into shape. Just get Steve to quit swearing at Google Guys.

Take a look at the MSFT stock charts for the last 5 years. 5 years ago, the stock sold for $35 a share (when adjusting for splits) Now it is at $22.56 per share. What has Bill Gates been doing for the last 5 years? He isn't helping his supporters very much.

I highly doubt that. First and foremost, Bill Gates was not the first person to dominate the technical gate ways that we call computers. He wasn't even the first person to make the internet. He is just a very smart and clever guy that knows how to work people around him to make him money. When he leaves out of sight, there is going to be another kid out there trying to make it, drops out of college, and discovers the next big thing!

He may be in a position to know that the economy is on the verge of collapse and may be leaving for that reason but his departure couldn't cause it.

Of course not, we did OK before he was in Microsoft, and will do so again- he has enough money now, and wishes to pursue the fun stuff- like helping those less fortunate. WTG Bill.

Actually hes not leaving anytime soon. even after he leaves in a couple years hes still going to be co-CEO and play a smaller part in the company. and that money will still be there- just be dispersed differently I suppose.

We had a steady economy before Microsoft's inception, so I think we'll be pretty safe.

The saying, "damned if you do, damned if you don't" comes to mind. The economy is screwed either way
