Tasers are being used on citizens for reasons that are not deadly situations. Should they be allowed to use tasers for these reasons or should tasers only be used in deaadly situations? According to Amnesty International, more than 166 citizens have died already after being tasered by police.

In serious situations when they need protection before back up gets there, yes the tasers would be needed if the person was armed and dangerous.
But, if it was like on Cops or Disorderly Conduct and can't remember which show I seen it on. But, that cop kept using the taser over and over again on some guy who was drunk. That was I think they said about 50,000 volts or something. That was to me a cop showing off on TV. The taser was not needed then.

My opinion is that the taser should be used to prevent a deadly situation. If it looks like a person that an officer is trying to take into custody or other wise deal with is about to escalate the situation, say reach a gun or knife, and the officer can stop that with a taser, he really doesn't have many options.

He can wait until the subject gets the deadly weapon and then have no recourse but to draw his/her weapon, or he/she can tase the person and prevent the escalation. But it's kind of hard to tell what the person is trying to do or will do at any given opportunity. And there is not a lot of time to figure it out, a very few seconds at most. Are there innocent bystanders around? If the subject gets a gun will he/she start shooting? The taser is supposed to be a level below deadly force.

There is no way for the officer to know that the subject has a weak heart or has too many drugs in his/her system to be able to stand up the the shock of the taser. The bottom line is that it's all unnecessary if the subject co-operates.

Would you rather be shot or tased?

OK...to begin with amnesty international also forgot to mention that rate of drug abuse, and how high each of those 166 taser victims were when tased...I believe it is like 95% or more. I bring this up, because a recent study showed that Taser deaths are usually resultant of a person high on crack who's heart is about to explode anyway. Not to mention out of all of the people that have been tased, only 166 died? I think that is a really good low number, I think car accidents ratios are way higher. Police won't use the taser unless the perpetrator is A) running from the police (this would be resisting arrest). B) holding a deadly weapon and threatening the officer. or C) attacking a police officer. So yeah...Tasers are an essential part of a police officer's duty, it saves way more lives than it has ever (or will ever for that matter) taken.

Two of them died here in Florida recently...
Then the coroner came on FOX news talking about how it wasn't murder because they had cocaine in their system and so it can be ruled as an accidental death.

The trouble I have with that is that two wrongs don't make a right and everyone should get a trial.
These guys were both just running away and were not armed at all.
There are also no studies to suggest that having cocaine in your system CAUSES a taser to kill you whereas you would live otherwise... it's flat out murder!

And besides, if I am going to arrest someone for cocaine posession, and I do something to them that I KNOW is more likely to kill them than another thing... how is that not INTENTIONAL murder?

Considering the ratio of taser death to taser use, its a miniscule quantity. Taser use should be on the same level as any other physical force (aka pushing someone on the ground.) Its not a deadly gun any more than one's fist.

The tasers should be used only if the suspect is putting himself the officer or anybody else in danger, not for minor scuffles that the officers should be trained and in good enough shape to deal with.

Tasers are a good way for people to co-operate with the police. The police should not have to deal with someone throwing punches or attacking them.

absolutely not! it should only be used if someone is acting irrational and if the person poses a threat. but now days they get shot, i honestly believe the police officers need to take a long look at why they shot first and ask questions later, and i still think they shouldn't shoot to kill. no matter what. the death penalty is there for a reason the officers should not shot to kill if you count the ones who are shoot you would be surprised!

I knew a neighbor where i used to live( lady )who got taserd because she wouldn't come out of her home and she wasn't holding any weapons and she had both hands on the air, as instructed.

NO THEY ARE INHUMANE ---- UNLESS ------ THE PERSON HAS HARMED / KILLED SOMEONE.
BUT FOR MINOR INSTANCES IT SHOWS TO ME THAT THE POLICE ARE JUST TRYING TO PUSH THEIR WEIGHT AROUND.
