I think my refrigerant is low since the A/C doesn't work, and I wanna refill it. I am pretty sure I have a leak but it only has to last me a few months since I'm ditching the car soon anyway.

Thanks for the answers everyone.
I have refilled the refrigerant before with a kit, I had just forgot what kind I have used.
When I refill it, there's just a cap I screw off the low-pressure line and then I use the nozzle on the can to connect to the opening and refill, right?

In a 1996 Lumina the freon is going to be 134. Is your A/C blowing at all. If so is it blowing warm? If it is blowing and blowing warm chances are you do have a leak. When you charge your A/C make sure to use A/C dye, that way you can find where the leak is at a later date. Freon is a gas, so you cannot see it, that is why you put the dye in your system. Once your A/C gets to the point of not blowing as cool as it should, you can look and see where the colored dye has come out. Then you will be able to have an idea of what it will take to fix it.

it should be R134a. there also should be a sticker somewhere under the hood that is very specific about what kind of refrigerant is in this vehicle. as an ase certified master tech i can tell you that this procedure should be done by someone who is qualified or you could be seriously hurt. doesn't have to be a mechanic, but at least someone who knows what they are doing, someone who's at least done it before.

Ha I have done the same thing.
R-12 was fazed out in '92. You probably couldn't even find it now (very expensive) ther are alternatives but R-134a is the original refridgerant and available everywhere.
