First off you need KNOWLEDGE!!!!
Please educate yourself first. Read ("Ferrets for Dummies" great book, not for dummies) and talk to those that have ferrets. There are many many ferrets sitting in shelters because people didn't know what they were getting into. Now, I LOVE ferrets, but I still don't think they are for everyone.
FERRETS ARE NOT CUDDLY. Yes, they love to play and they are about the most entertaining animal I've known, but they don't like to be held. They want to run run run. They do slow down a bit when they get older, but if you want something that'll snuggle with you, get a cat or a dog. I must admit though that there is 1 in a 100 that WILL snuggle. Ferrets should not have veggies or fruit, they are meat eaters. And ferrets do smell, no matter what you do. The smell can be kept to a minimum, but they will always smell like ferrets. Ferrets are smart and sneaky and you will have to ferret proof your house or at least one room of it so they can run and play. They need about 4 hours of playtime out of the cage and they do want to interact with you, so be prepared to spend a lot of time with them. As ferrets get older they are prone to certain diseases. Most of them are curable to an extend, but it's hard to find a ferret knowledgeable vet and then it can get expensive. I'm saving about 10% of my income every week, just in preparation of that. They also need annual vet visits and shots and parasite prevention. So, ferrets are expensive.
You will need: 1 large cage with hammock and bedding( I use old t-shirts, they are washable), a litter pan(and several for the room it's allowed to run in), litter( paper based is best, like "Yesterdays News or Marshalls. No pine or cedar based, please, bad for their respiratory tract), a water bottle or two, a food dish, ferret food. That's your basic set up. You'll also need clippers for their nails, cleaning solution for their ears, FerretLax to prevent hairballs and bowel obstructions, FerreTone - because they love it and it's a great training tool, treats, toys, maybe a leash, shampoo. That should do you for a while.

You'll need of course everything that is listed above.. but you also will need patience, and A LOT of love. They are really sweet animals. I have one. He and I go to the park all the time. They have harnesses, and leashes and you can take them for walks just like a dog. It's definately a conversational piece.
I have a cage with a slide, and a tunnel, and a hammock. They love to sleep in hammocks. Also he likes to sleep in a shoe box. I cut a hole big enough for him to get in it, and tape the lid on it, and put a blanket inside, and he loves it. Also need a corner litter pan, because they don't use regular litter pans, and I have to clean my ferrets cage out every 3 days or it's nasty.. They love to make messes.

dont pay more than 100.$ get a cage, water bottle ,vitamins. My ferret lived almost 12 years which is very old. Make sure you ferret is a youngster and you train it. It might be difficult but its worth it. The most important thing is dont just give it ferret food - give it honey, dates ,cheerios ,and treats. Get cat treats they're the same ingredients but a lot cheaper and alot fresher also they will love it more.
Good luck to you and your ferret, Briana
p.s. did you know they are in the bear family so you could name her Missy Pooh

depending on age, you dont need a cage, water bottles etc. i had a total of 5 rescued ferrets, and they hated the cage. you let them pick the corner they want to poop in , put a litter box there (keep clean!) mine slept behind a drawer or behind a couch. they all ran free as a cat, and seldom did i have many problems.

They are cute and fun. You'll need a cage for it to sleep in. You will also have to get a littler box and teach it how to use it. My ex had one and it never quite got the hang of using the box. IT was gross. They like to sleep in hammocks and play with toys (esp. "sleeve" like toys they can get into.) Oh, and maybe pet bedding for the cage and the litter box.

Go to Petfinder.com and check out the classifieds. Many people need to find homes for their ferrets and often they sell them with the cage. (If not, e-mail me, I have one) The classifieds are on the bottom left of the page on Petfinder. If you're not in love with them yet, check this out (and turn up your speakers!):
