I am thinking of breeding Oscars! From some people I hear it is easy, from others they reccomend not doing it. But I want to do something with fish and breeding. I think I'd like a couple 2-3 inch Red Oscars to start out in a 30 gallon tank and possibly move into a future 120 gallon tank my mom might get me for my B-day. I'm 13 years old but am not an amature fish breeder. For about 1 year, I bred guppies/platies/mollies and then I bred snails, then I wanted to breed my two Chiclids together, but before I could get to it, my rare Goby fish decided to take a bite out of life!

So, I need some info on Red Oscar breeding! I know how big they get, what they eat, what their tank should be like, and more. I just need some info about BREEDING. if you want 10 points. Thanks for helping!

I have had several oscars and now am doing the same thing you are. I found out the secret to getting a breeding pair of Oscars. First you have to start out with at least 6, 2 to 3 inch or so Red Oscars. I am doing Tiger Oscars. You have to get 6 or more because they will only live peacfully in this large group and after about 6 to 8 months or a little longer you will find that two of them have started to hang out together and will eventually take over a corner or one end of the tank. This is your mated pair. I have been told by some long time breeders that this is the real deal. After you get the mated pair just sell or give the other 4 away and move them into a bigger tank. Then when you get to that stage just look on the internet and find out more about the actual signs of Oscars breeding and what you can do to help them. As far as how big? They will get as big as a dinner plate eventually. But that several years away. In a year you can have 8 inch fish if you feed them a lot. Thats the secret with Oscars the more you feed them the more they grow. They are pigs, they will eat until all they can do is lay on the bottom on thier side. You can start these 6 or so Oscars in a 20-30 gallon tank , but if you can I think a 55 gallon is much better. This tank would be big enough forever, unless you want to go bigger. A good thing to do is every 2 weeks take 20 % of what ever gallon size tank you have and make a water change. I keep 5 milk jugs for this job. But you probalbly already know about water changes. Also Wall-Mart has a good deal on 55 gallon tanks. You get the tank ,lights, filter for about 150 dollars. As far as food. I feed mine those shrimp pellets you buy at the pet store. As they grow I put live feeder fish in the tank and also I get creyfish and pull thier pinchers off and throw them in, Oscars really love these. Thier colors will get real vivid when they get live food. Also worms are good too. Trust me this is the real deal on Oscars. A 55 gallon tank is just fine for two Oscars. You will be Ok for 2-3 years then you might think about a bigger tank. Check out the web site glasscages.com they have some great buys on bigger tanks, dont go to the pet store for a tank bigger that 50 gallons or you will pay way too much.

My sister has an Oscar he is 8 years old and named King. He acts like everything around him is his, lol. I hope you know what your getting your self into. They are alot of work. Try to get a female Oscar. They are going to be very aggressive towards each other, because they want to breed. Let nature take its course let the fish do what they do. But if with in a week or 2 nothing has happend and your male Oscar is still being aggressive your out of luck. My sister fish breeds when it wants to.
