Go to W3C.org and you will get all the information you need. They are the organization responsible for setting the rules of how to write HTML ad all the other markup languages. There are also many sites on the internet that have samples and how-to's.
HTML is simply a tag base language.
For example, to center text on a page, you would use the center tag, like this:

This is centered text

Note the opening and closing tags.

The previous posters, have provided some good reference sites. http://www.htmlgoodies.com and the w3c reference earlier are great starters. Use notepad that was a great suggestion. You want to understand what the basics of html coding is not just use a wysiwyg editor. (what you see is what you get). The templates are good after you have an understanding. They can be tempting to use and not really learn the code. They are good for layout ideas. I would actually suggest you get the basics of html, than learn xhtml, and than css.

You can get a program to do it for you. Try Nvu it's a complete Web Authoring System for Linux desktop users as well as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Nvu (which stands for "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Now anyone can create web pages and manage a website with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML.

get a book or use a website..LissaExplains (http://www.lissaexplains.com/) is a great resource for beginning-advanced web design..if ur a guy don't be fazed by the girly graphics, even grown men use its forums...don't settle for WYSIWYG programs that do the coding for u..it could cause problems in the long run so use notepad like the other guy said..good luck

You should get a book on the subject.

It is relatively easy to learn the basics.

It is a mark-up language, where it looks like a text document, with tags inserted to get the words to do what the "programmer" wants.

Tags look like <> and .
