It depends on how long you are going to have it in storage. My small frigde from college was in storage only a couple months and stunk a little because we didn't leave the door proped.

So, if it's only going to be a few weeks, I'd say you can leave it shut, but maybe put some baking soda in it just in case, otherwise find a way to have at least an 1" open door to get some air flow in there.

do you mean like an old refrigerator, not in use?

some places require that the door be chained CLOSED; other places require that the door be completely removed.

The problem is that kids may hide in an unused refrigerator or freezer. There is no way to open those appliances from the inside. Children playing an innocent game of hide-and-seek can die of suffocation.

Even if your area has no law about this, it would be best to make sure that you don't inadvertently cause someone's death.

I do not know what you mean. Have them open for what?
Just put the food in and then shut the door so all the cold air would not escape.

Yes mam at least open a crack and most important of all if it has a latch on it,, either remove it or disable it.. Too many kids have suffocated in them so be extra careful!

No, they need them removed if they are anywhere that a little child could get locked inside of it.
