well how about a ceiling repair kit. I think they come with some kind of patch you put over it then you put some kind of spackle stuff over it and sand it and paint it. Either that or you could just tell your landlord that your neighboor above took a huge shitt and it came down through the ceiling and smelled up your whole bathroom and at the same time the fumes sorta caused this mold to start forming. Im sure your landlord would understand ;) good luck!

Yes as renter you have that right, as well as having the ceiling fixed to as near original as possible.
The issue may be the method to check for, and destroy any mold,,,,especially black mold, that may grow.
The landlord may be honest, decent, and attempt bleach, or a germicidal mold killer, but if it becomes black mold it will return.
I can't state the agency that might help, but you can start with your local code enforcement agency which should be at your local courthouse or govt agency building, housing all agencies?
If in fact the landlord allows mold, he is in violation of a few ordinances.
I'd research first before getting confrontational, but follow through in any case.
Last year, in a commercial building, 11,000 sq. ft. I had to replace every bit of drywall after a hurricane flooding situation. The orginization tried chemical remedies without permanent success.
Mold doesn't strictly attack and grow in the gypsum of the drywall, but will show up on the paper surface, through the paint, and keep growing, if unchecked. It is most certainly unhealthy if not life threatening.

Legaly you do have the right to ask for them to inspect for anything at all including mold and mildew. You also have the right to tell them to fix it right away! If they dont and they dont offer you another appartment you can withhold up to half the months rent untill it gets fixed, as long as you have proof that you have the money youre withholding so that you can give it to them in full when it gets done. So that means you would have to open up a bank account to put half the rent in. then if it ever was taken to court youd have proof of everything... and more than likely youd win the case. good luck

Just get up there with a flash light and look around since you have this "hole"...
If you see any white spots, or dark patches or green, then you will have to worry. But, if it was just a "leak" that was caught in a day, the hole being left open will dry it out... (just dont take baths or showers with out the exhaust fan on, or you will promote more growth of mold).
Also, your landlord will have to fix the ceiling, you are not responsible for it...
I wish you well..
