It gives you step by step directions on how to save it as a GIF file.

Notice there's an Image Type pulldown menu. ImageReady allows you to use ye olde adaptive palette to map the colors of the image. You can also use Perceptual and Selective palettes, which use different algorithms. Try them all to see which one you prefer.

It saves as joeg becasue ithat is the default format. you will need to change it to gif the first few times, then if the software picks up on the fact that you use another file format, it will automatically place the gif as a default.

Depending on the particular software titlef you restart the cmpmuter, Windows may restore the JPEG setting upon startup.

You should be using jpg. It supports 24bit color. GIF is only 256 colors. Once you save as GIF, it blends the nearby colors, and there is no way to get back to the colorful spead of colors that you started with.

You should always retain your original. Every time that you save, using a compressed formats like jpg and gif, you lose something.

Try Picasa, Which Can help you convert Pictures into main file types, like JPG, BMP, GIF,TIFF.

A free software download from Google.
Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organised.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures – you can email, print photos home, make gift CDs, and even post pictures on your own blog.

Well you can change it using "file type" on the "Save AS" menu, but most of the time it saves it like that because it is the best file type for that image. You can change it, but it may freak out the colors.
