I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. When I use my blinkers, they work normally. However, while I'm driving, the clicking sound is sporatic but the lights are not blinking. Is this a flasher, a relay, or a fuse? Please help!

ok this is from my sister mrs.goodwrench who tried to e-mail you to no avail so here she is.....HI Renae!Renae, it's very nice to meet you.let's start with one thing at a time. phase1: corrosion is very bad for the battery, the cable connectors & for the car. just what have you done exactly?1st, you need to have the car tested. have a cranking system, charging system, battery test done. in the process have the battery serviced & the terminals cleaned or if badly corroded & damaged replaced .when the terminals are cleaned/repaired & the battery is recharged then you can check the charging system. if the battery tests bad replace it because you must have a good power source for the car in order to check everything else...then if the electrical system checks out ok you're in good shape. if you check the flasher relay 1st, the results may be incorrect & then if you replace it you may have the same results & gained absolutely nothing except a still broken car. now that you've confirmed that the electrical is fine & up to standard you can move on to phase#2: if you find the flasher usually it is connected within the confines of the fuse box. so go to the fusebox usually under the steering wheel find the map or legend of the fuse box in detail & check all the fuses-1st. if all the fuses look ok, you can try to remove the flasher from it's position but be careful. double check that the system is still doing what you said it was in your question. confirm the symptoms are still there. ok to remove the flasher it unplugs like a lamp, make sure there's nothing fastening it down. now are the symptoms still there? you may have another flasher separate from the relay check for it when you buy the new flasher. if you install the flasher correctly, it should remedy the situation. e-mail me again ok & let me know that you made out ok..and don't hesitate to contact my sister either ok thanks mrs. goodwrench & mrs. hotwheels

Sounds like a bad switch. Find out where that clicking is coming from. That will help narrow it down. Fiddle with the blinker switch when you are parked to try to stop the noise. When you are able to stop and start the noise at will, you are getting close.

check your electrical system 1st & make sure the charging system is ok. from that point check the fuse. from that point disconnect the flasher(relay) and plug it back in. from that point replace it. still a problem replace the relay(if separate) all along. then bring it in for a diagnosis, because these are the things they will check for after that it's the dirty work-trace diagnostics so make sure before you pay for that you need it!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you have a stuck relay. Relays work as switches, they transfer electricity on demand. So since that noise keeps happening, or happens intermittently, it must be a stuck or shorted relay.
