It's about two boys who build a spaceship out of tin cans and, with the help of a proffessor or doctor in the neighborhood, fly to Mars. I recall that the "doctor" who helped them was Martian himself, a fact obvious to the reader, though the boys don't seem to be aware. Ring any bells with anyone?

This sounds like a book I read in 5th grade called "The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet" by Eleanor Cameron.

It sounds like a Robert Heinlein novel to me, though I am not sure which one. He has lots of great kids books about kids doing interesting sciencey things, but mostly because they live in the future - like Red Planet, The Rolling Stones, Starship Trooper (yes, the one the movie was loosely based on), Star Beast, etc.

He also has some adult books, which have a little more "relationship" or romance content that you might not want for a child.

Amymame's got it -- there were a series of Tycho Bass books ("Mr Bass' Planetoid" and so on) by Eleanor Cameron. They're still fun!

Try doing a subject matter search on Amazon, thru kiddie lit, you may be able to find it that way.
