Peanut butter is the tried and true lure. Back to back traps against the wall also makes much sense. I buy the cheap traps at the dollar store (4 in a pkg)....then I throw trap and dead mouse away (I'm a wuss). But why not try to close up their entrance holes? At night turn off all the lights and have a buddy go outside with a bright light (trouble light?). You lay inside the house and watch for light leakage. Do this room by room and then plug up their entrance holes (steel wool works good and can be shoved into small cracks).

Alternatively, you can use small pieces of gum drops. Many kinds are available (Mike and Ikes are my favorite as I get to enjoy the remaining amount). Also, the price of a good box trap that allows for humane disposal is scarcely more than a couple of dollars ($2.59 @ The Home Depot) so your budget is no excuse for buying snaps. The mouse that is clever enough to defeat the snap lever is curiously drawn to find out how to get the bait placed inside the little plastic house, and I've caught more than one at the same time. However, if you don't check it frequently, another mouse can come along and push the door in enough to let their buddies out, and I've seen it happen.. Smart little buggers.

We had that happen once at our house. We re-baited the traps every night for days. The next morning the bait was always gone. Then, one day, I walked in just in time to see a nice trail of little black ants to and from the trap. They already had it almost gone! I couldn't believe it.

Peanut butter or a dab of regular butter, will attract them...

If your using the 'snap trap' put it against the wall, as thats where they scurry around, and if you have two of them, put them so that they are opposite of each other, with the bait at the open ends...(That way, if a rat jumps one trap, they will land in the second one).

I wish you well..

Peanut butter, but do not touch the trap with your hands. Use peanut butter because instead of cheese, because you have to continually change the cheese as it rots. Peanut butter is good for like infinity! good luck

i found that the cage traps are lot more successfull at catching them critters then the snappers, no I'm saying this just because its a humane way of catching it, i've done dirtier deed as well. I just found that the cage works much better often mostly because the trap area is larger.

Most good answers here, but never mind the crunchy or smooth, they don 't care. Corn works well too.

I choose not to kill them and no offen se to you at all, I get it, and THANK you for not using glue traps.
