The fifth ranked in the world?? Ranked by who??

Maybe USA is ranked the fifth in North America (hmm...think about how many countries there are in North America...), definitely not the world.

You have to look at who is giving out the rankings, Coca-cola is a big sponsor of the world cup, and I'm sure that their being an american company has a little bit to do with the fact that the US team is ranked as highly as it is. Especially when the general concensus is that team USA has absolutely no chance at going all the way. The fact is that as a nation, we just aren't a soccer crowd. If given the choice, the average sports fan will pick football, basketball, or even baseball over watching a soccer match. Myself included. Until that changes, and until as much money is put into soccer programs as is spent on the other three sports I mentioned above, the US will never have a chance in these international tournaments.

Rankings are the way losers can save face. The reason we play the games is because rankings don't include competitiveness. If rankings were "real" then why play the Super Bowl or the World Cup or the World Series or the Stanley Cup Play-Offs??

When we were placed into the "Group Of Death" our fate was sealed.......UNLESS we had a real team to put out there on the pitch.

Our team was NOT built to WIN....it was built NOT to LOSE. We'll probably end up with 3 points which is the same as a tie in each of three games.

Some of the guys who COULD have played for us but were over-looked are at home right now CONVINCED that they could have made a difference.

The way it is turning out.....they are probably right.

The rankings are bogus. the USA is ranked 5th because they only play teams in their geographic area. And since most of the teams in and around North America really suck, besides Mexico, wins still count as wins so the USA beats a lot of crappy teams and ends up ranked 5th. When really, they're probably not even in the top 20 best teams in the world.

Because of the skewed way FIFA presented that ranking.

The "top" teams were scored by how well they did in qualifying, games won goals scored etc. But qualifying, for each team, only took place within the respective "local groups". USA, by virtue of it's size for one thing, came best in the north american group as the only other half serious contender was Mexico (vs canada, jamaica, trinidad, and many smaller ones, most of whom got absolutely nowhere). Thanks to the competition brought by Mexico, they were only 5th; without them they would have waltzed it to an almost flawless victory and 1st place.

Whereas there's a LOT more competition between those in the european, south american, african groups etc, and for a team there to score highly, they really must be something special, e.g. Brazil, the very most top 2 or 3 european teams (likely with many of the lower-placed sides actually playing better than the USA but losing out becase of the quality of the opposition :-)), etc.

Because you only qualify by winning the weakest of all the qualifying regions: the concacaf. this boosts their rating in the eyes of FIFA (who should watch more football) and confirms the correct view that USA are quite frankly crap at football (soccer). The last 2 performances were poor at best. The Americans are megalomaniacs with over inflated sense of self worth. You need to earn the world cup, not just overpower other countries through war. You should ask 'why do i feel USA deserve the world cup when they are so clearly rubbish?'.

no longer a danger. you won't be able to win the Copa usa, so how in the international do you assume them to win a tournament with the better of Europe, Africa and Asia thrown into the combination. you won't be able to even get out of a set with Paraguay and Colombia. usa in simple terms doesn't have the football frame of mind, and until eventually they completely start up following and assisting the game, they received't get any stars coming by. they'll pick many years and a huge replace to being the most proper team in North and correct usa, in no way recommendations some thing else of the international.

Im a US fan and hopefully Italy beats the Czechs & US beats Ghana. Then will most like play Brazil. Brazil hasnt played that good the first couple of game, but they always win when it counts.(also Brazil always starts slow, then suddenly they play like World Cup Champs). If team USA does make it, hopefully Brazil will play bad

Look at the previous world cups... US pretty much always chokes.
Also, the US team consists of mainly American league players, every other team has players across the world that come back to play for their home country. Ex. Ronaldhino plays in Spain regularly.

Because the teams that the U.S had to play before the wold cup were not great teams, and they easily walked over them and climbed their way up the rankings. There is hardly any competition in the non-European leagues.
