is there any way to tell if a mobile phone is being used? or if it is just lying dormant somewhere?
as in, if someone has gone on holiday and left the phone behind or if it is actually being used.
it rings for so long then the answer phone just picks up. and even asking for a text report will only confirm that the text has arrived at destination not that its actually been read.
anybody any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is the various online tracking services which allow you to track mobiles to their location.

They're NOT free and some require for the mobile phone user to confirm that they allow for someone to see their location.

Only other thing I can suggest is calling the mobile network and asking them "Is someone actually using the phone or not".

Then again, (I presume you live in the UK) you could always dial 141 before the number which would hide the number you're calling from (aka: With-held number).

If you ask for a report for a text message then saying it's pending means that it's not been sent from the message centre to the phone, and if it's delivered then it's arrived at the recipients phone. I think that's how it works. If your SMS has been delivered and you don't get a reply then you are being ignored.

if they have gone on holiday and left it behind it should eventually run out of power then you would just get the answer machine as soon as you call it , but if it been ringing out every time you call it say more than a couple of days then it must be getting charged, but you cant tell if the texts have been read as you said

You can call the provider. They can tell you how many minutes have been used and the time the last call was placed, however they cannot tell you the number that the call was placed to until it is billed. Some (like cingular) won't even tell you when the last call was placed until it is billed.

I know police can track them in an emergency but other than that I dont think you know if they have been read & not just 'sent'....
