Given the history of scandals within the bureaucratically bloated and inept U.N., I don't understand how ANYONE could trust the direction of these 'peace missions' to a corrupt individual like Kofi Annan?

The U.N. needs to be COMPLETELY OVERHAULED, or DISSOLVED. Until any of those things happens, I suggest that the U.S. and its allies take a a long and scenic detour off of the U.N. 'Pretentiousness Highway'...

The UN is always as competent or incompetent as the members want her to be. After all, the UN is not an independent body what makes her own decision. Everything is decided by majority votes and on top of that the five permananent members of the Security Council (Britain, China, France, Russia and USA) all have a veto and can block any decision they are not happy with (for whatever reason).
As long as that is the case, we cannot expect much from the UN and should stop blaming individuals working there. They have a difficult enough job, especially the unfortunate person who is the Secretary General. If he acts, he will be blamed for being over-zealous, and if he does nothing, he is accused of dithering.
Countries use the UN when it suits them, and ignore her when it suits them. That's the reason for her chronic ineffectiveness.
If we really want a proper UN that is dealing with the problems on our planet effectively, we will have to give her real power and a lot of money. At present the USA bullies the UN staff, is way behind with paying her membership fee, and sets herself above any UN resolution that does not please the White House or Israel.
And one more word to Africa: Most African states are among the worst abusers of human rights, and by blocking action against one of their own, they also make sure that no one will turn against them when the time comes. The genocide in Rwanda was truly a crime against humanity. So is the current situation in Sudan we hear so much about. But the same goes for Zimbabwe (whose corrupt and criminal leader Robert Mugabe is protected by South Africa's president Tabor M'beki) and at least another dozen African countries. And let's not forget Mozambique, where the current US administration supports and finances criminal war lords against which Bill Clinton sent the Marines and Special Forces in.

There are two issues here. Firstly the genocide in Dafur. This is a scandal. I remember Colin Powell referring to what was happening in Dafur as genocide and still we do nothing. Shame on all of us.
The second issue is the effectiveness of the UN. It may not be the best organisation in the world but I cannot think of another organisation which represents every country. We should resolve to improve the UN. What is important is that we do not let the US use their money to make it a mouthpiece of the US.
The UN should be moved to Switzerland or Singapore.

For the most part I think the UN is a good thing. Maybe it's just the corrupt governments and agencies that they have to go through. I think what those people are TRYING to do is awesome. And if there are problems that you think need to be addressed you should go to the root of that problem and get involved. I don't know enough about it to give advise or to much of an opinion. But if you know what we and others can do to help fix this, LET ME KNOW!

The UN is probably the most corrupt organization in the world. Kofi Anan is a complete fool and outright criminal as is his whole family. We shouldleave the UN and send it to France with the rest of the losers.

Well, I don't see us doing anything about it in the UN either, do you?
