Is it just me or have there been a lack of good Horror movies in the paste few years? Every scary movie these days are spoofs, half comedies or blood fests. The latest trend seems to be "if we chop peole up, it will be scary!" There has been no depth to any of the recent films. What do you think?

They have great Japanese horror movies that American film makers have redone.

The Ring , The Grudge and Dark Water are all remakes of Japanese films.

The movie coming out called Pulse is a remake of a Japanese film. Try watching these movies in their Japanese versions it makes for a better scare.

They are quite different, very eerie. If you can get past the subtitles which you don't notice after a while.

In my opinion there has been many. Although not from Hollycrap. The best horror films are independent. As a reviewer, I've watch several awsome films, but again, I only deal with independent. I won't even touch the Hollycrap films. To find good ones, you may have to dig a little, but there's alot out there. Some to look for that are pretty scarey:

The Descent
Boo!
Fear of Clowns
Hillside Cannibals
Chaos
House of the Dead II: Dead Aim
Tamara
Boy Eats Girl
2001 Maniacs

I agree, but it's seems more like there hasn't been much worth seeing in the past 10-15 years.

What ever happened to the element of anticipation, suspense, and surprise -and the sense of reality? Most people have a fear of the unknown, so where's that element in today's so-called "horror" movies?

The last really good one that sticks in my mind is, "When a Stranger Calls". The 1979 original, not the recent 2006 remake.

IMHO, certain horror movies I avoid like the plague. Ones that are based on true stories (even though they usually blow them out of proportion I hear) and ones that are about serial killers (cuz that's basically reality, depending on the plot of the movie). Ones that are about satanic type things used to scare me more, but not so much anymore. The kind of horror movies I like are in the horror section but I really think they shouldn't be because they're really not scary. Ones about vampires and werewolves, like Underworld, and Bram Stoker's Dracula (big difference, I know) and other ones are my favorite. The first Blade was okay, but the second one pretty much sucked and the third, well, I dunno. Anyway, that's my two cents on horror movies, etc.

i liked saw (i thought it was hilarious)

but you're right. The only recent one that comes close to being good, is the Omen, and thats a remake. It seems like film-makers are running out of ideas and trying to make money rather than trying to make good films.

I saw 'Dark Water' and thought it was pretty good. I know a lot of people didn't like it. It didn't have a chainsaw or a butcher knife in it. It was more of a psychological thriller. Probably too sophisticated for most people.

Unfortunately they are long in the past. It's so disappointing.
