J. R. R. Tolkien was probably the most successful writer of the last century, in the 1990's Terry Pratchett was the most popular British writer until he was overtaken by J. K. Rowling. All of these people though are fantasy writers, and not strictly novelists. The most successful novelists, supposedly, are Jeffrey Archer (amazingly enough) and Jilly Cooper. Personally I have never read either of these.
