my mothers computers C: drive crashed... i researched some recovery programs but it seem logical that the computer has to be on, and the hard drive has to be installed to recover programs from it. thats the problem here... when my dad tries to boot up the computer, it won't go all the way, because of the hard drive... this drive held tons of item that were very important to my family so if you have any ideas of how i can get her computer up and running... if no ideas on that then i need some ideas on how i might be able to recover some or all of the files off this drive...

My recommendation would be to send the drive to a data recovery specialist. If the drive is making noise, like a grinding sound, then parts are touching and each time you hear the sound more data may be lost.

If there is no noise then maybe it isn't hardware that is the problem but windows. If you have access to another computer you can take the hard drive out of the problem system and put it in as a slave in the working system.

Here's a decent article on installing a second hard drive but there is tons of info out there. http://www.ehow.com/how_6030_install-second-hard.html

Once in as a slave if the drive is still good but the os has taken a dive then you could at least copy the files you need from it.

Regards

OK you have two options here they are. Go out a purchase another hard drive make the current one a slave and the new one the master. To be safe take the current hard drive out and put the new one in load the new one up with the operating system after that is done shut down the computer unplug the power cord and make the other hard drive the slave and the new on the master make sure you do this or it will fight and try to load the old hard drive not the new one. After this is done you plug it in and turn it back on. The old hard drive will show up in my computer and you will be able to see everything on it then you can copy the files over that you need. If the old hard drive is making a clicking sound it is shot there is only one thing you can do to get some of the info off and that is to see it to a lab and pray they can get all the info off that you want. This will cost you about a grand. If you need help with this you can contact me in email and I will be happy to help you out.

You may have to take it to a local computer repair company. When something similar happened to me it was time to get a new computer anyway. So I put the old hard drive in the 2nd hard drive slot and accessed the files off of it, but logged into the new hard drive. That was a little tricky too, but there are websites that can tell you which pins to shift up and down (with drawings too so you'll know what I'm talking about).

Call the Geek Squad from Best Buy.

or

buy another HD and install the Windows again, make it as the primary HD, and set other one (the crashed one) as secondary, you'll then be able to access to data on the old HD.
