OK, the chain is only as strong as it weakest link.
if you install a agp 8x on a 4x motherboard, it will only perform at that speed... that is, as long as you can actually sit that card in the slot, it will work, but in reality there is not much point on "upgrading" if your motherboard can only send the data to the card as fast as 4x, it does not matter how much memory your new video card have, it will not improve all that much... is kinda like installing racing tires to a car that is not a race car, tha tires can only run as fast as the car.

hi Y'all. I dont imagine you may have 2 same motherboards with 2 distinct AGP slots, because the 4x and the 8X chipsets are completely distinct, and the motherboard chips and the architectures would all be upgraded to examine the more recent 8X speeds. What you've envisioned does no longer provide a genuine illustration of the only distinction in 8x to 4x on a particular card, because, you'll unavoidably be utilising 2 totaly distinct motherboards - through your own definition. The 8x board would enable the more recent CPU's, the more recent frontside bus speeds, the more recent ram speeds and configurations, to bypass alongside with the more recent 8X format of the AGP slot. In a clinical try, you are able to in undemanding words replace ONE variable at a time, and the following, you'd be replacing a dozen variables suddenly, and therefore arrive at an unkown end. in simple terms re- writing the BIOS itself could have wide ameliorations on the performance of the completed computer... BIOS improvements are issued month-to-month, and do make wide ameliorations on lots of the machines that I easily have. except that, i'd guess that very similar motherboards, one with 4x and one with 8x would element out more effective performance on the 8X bus, yet... in an recommendations-blowing many comments on an recommendations-blowing many motherboards and video playing cards, I easily have considered the position the game enthusiasts report to set the 8x all the way down to 4x to regain performance and stability, even even if both the motherboard and the video card are 8x compliant. you're probable maximum proper off to study actual benchmarks on a particular motherboard and image card blend, and evaluate the comments. And as for your remark that an expensive card is more effective positive than a more cost-effective card - do not carry your breath - often times the cheapo card is a lot more effective positive designed and outperfoms the fairly marketed, and far more effective expensive variety ! - in undemanding words the benchmarks tell the reality ! good success !

Yes, just plug into AGP slot, but your Video card runs in 4x mode.
