He wrote a horrible letter to his college telling tales of torture and abuse. Stated his father sexually abused one of the girls and that we both abused him, he sent this letter to the school hoping to get a dependency waiver so that he can get his schooling paid for. He was adopted and all we have ever tried to do was help him but he has hit us broken his fathers nose and threatened to kick my butt many times. He does not live with us anymore and he just keeps telling people that we are abusers both phyical and sexual abusers. Not true and he has no proof. We do however have proof to show that he is lying. Is there anything we can do to stop him from spreading these lies. Please help I am in New York...

First of all, what your stepson is doing is libel, because it is in written form. Slander is oral, which he may also be doing, but since he's sending letters, it's libel.

If you're serious about stopping him, start with the police. Libel laws vary from state to state, it may not be a criminal matter in New York, and they will be able to tell you that.

If it is a civil matter, speak with an attorney about bringing a case against your stepson and what a reasonable expectation of the outcome might be. It might not be worth the time, effort, and money involved if your stepson has no assets to lose, etc.

Your stepson is a grown man who will have to learn his lesson the hard way. Don't despair; you have done your legal obligation as parents. No matter what lies he's portraying, let him continue to marinate in his own juices. Pretty soon the evidence will come to light and you'll be vindicated. Just don't hold any grudges against him for the physical, and emotional abuse. I do believe that you should bar him from your home until he proves that he can act in a respectable and mature fashion. Physical abuse is not a joke; particularly with a family. Your husband adopted this kid and you accepted to take on his responsibilities as a unit. However; there are some limitations and your stepson has cross the line. Good luck!!!

Send a copy of these reports to the dean of student services and financial aid dept...he may take the hint that he can't get away with it unscathed.

Attorney up and get a cease and desist order. Your attorney will have solid advice given your state law.

The only time someone uses "and I" instead of "and me" and it just happens to be the wrong use. Very funny.
