Back in the day, CRT monitors (that is, Cathode Ray Tube monitors, like your "typical" non-LCD, non-Plasma TV set) were at risk of burn-in if an image stayed on the screen for too long. A similar risk existed for projection televisions, hence the warning on many to avoid playing video games on them (many games have static areas of the screen, such as point totals, that would burn in.)

Nowadays, it is very rare to encounter a monitor that needs a screensaver for protection, and screensavers have mostly become a form of entertainment. In fact, many screensavers have static areas (areas that don't update often), and if used with an older monitor could actually cause burn-in instead of preventing it!

Note that you CAN save some money on electricity (and extend the live of your laptop screen) by setting your screensaver to go blank after a little while, ideally with the EnergyStar settings (so that the screen actually shuts off rather than simply displaying black.)

Caveat: that there are some LCDs on the market today (I have one in front of me right now) that will *temporarily* burn in if left running -- I found this out by running a screensaver that had static areas, and the static areas burned into the screen for about three days.

Best bet: use a screensaver as entertainment, not protection, and set the computer to power save your monitor after ten minutes or so of running it.

A screen saver will only "kick in" when your computer is idle. If you don't put one that you like, your computer should default to it's own built -in screen saver. Sooooooooo, why not choose a pic that you like ?

No, your LCD screen will not burn in. You can turn the screen saver feature off if you want to.

You only need a screen saver if you want one. It doesn't do anything constructive.
