We rednecks can laugh at our stereotypical characteristics and not be offended. I did have to start wearing a hat that blocks more of the sun though. Sunburns really hurt.

And Theresa, I've worked more hard hours at 35 than you probably will in your life time. "redneck" isn't offensive. You are.

that depends on your perspective on working, outside, and sunburn. if that's all good to you then Congratulations. It's a compliment.

When the word was put to use as an insult. All of those things were considered passe' ( even a sun tan). The opposite of a redneck was a blueblood. So pale you could see their veins through the skin.

The origin of the word is not offensive.
It's the way people use it. Usually when someone calls another a redneck they are implying that the person is ignorant.

I will agree that the term is complimentary in that it connotes a working person and that is to be respected. However, in the course of history the term has also come to mean an ignorant person and that is the basis of it being an insult.

"redneck" originally referred to the good 'ol boys down south, farmers and ranchers and roustabouts and hell raisin' people. Many people are proud to be a redneck, so it can be either a compliment or an insult.

It's alright to be a redneck.
Being a lazy bum who sucks at the government tit and whines about their welfare check being late, that ticks me off, but being a red neck is cool.

And to the person who asked what white person ever worked for themself...get off it already.

i think redneck can call each other rednecks as friends, like blacks can call each other ni**er. Its when outsiders use it that the definitions change and the word becomes negative.

If you go by Jeff Foxworthy's definition, then yes it can be a compliment, I suppose.

Jeff Foxworthy's definition goes something like this "the complete absence of sophistication" and at one time or another we all have experienced this.
