I just purchased a stamped cross stitch tablecloth. It's been a long time since I've done cross stitch, so I have a question. The kit calls for me to use four strands of floss. When I start, do I knot it in the back so it won't pull through, or do I let a long tail in the back and just weave it through a few of the X's. What's the best way? Thanks for any pointers you can give me.

I bought the kit from Herrschners catalog. You can go to www.herrschners.com to see what's in their catalog.

I'd say weave the thread... if you knot it... you'll see little balls under the table cloth when you put in flat on the table. Then you put a drink on it... and it's not level... drink spills all over it... just a mess. Mess. Weave it. Weave it for the love of God!

You don't have time to be cross stitching table cloths. You should be over your daughters house doing her laundry. ;)

Would it match the New Mexican Hand Towels, perhaps?

Do not knot it! When starting, leave a tail and as you do the first half of the X's, be sure to loop over the tail. When you're done it should look like a line under the x's on the backside. Do not knot at the end either. Just go under the threads of the x's and snip the end. Just be sure to cover the tails with at least 4 or 5 stitches. In cross stitch, you never knot!

Also, just a tip about those 4 strands of floss. It takes some time to do this, but it really makes for a nicer look in the end. Here's what you do...separate each strand and then put back together reversing some, so they aren't in the same direction as when you started.
Good luck with your project.

Use a waste knot to start your stitch, then clip it and weave the ends under the back of the stitched. IMHO this is the best way - the link below shows how.

Don't knot it or you'll have a lump. Leave a tail on the thread once you pull it through the first time and make sure your thread goes over it as you make your first few stitches. You should have a line of thread underneath. Have fun!

Tucking the strands under makes a nicer looking piece. Just be sure to wash it gently be hand. No machine.

I always knot it, cause I dont want it to come undone. Where did you find the kit? I cant find anything other than pillowcases, and small iron-ons.
