My mom and step-dad have been together for 14 years. My mom has always made me call my step-dad "dad".
Now that I'm older, people think it's weird I call my step-dad Dad, and not, well Step-dad. But i think "step-dad" is a rude informality. I don't want to hurt his feelings, but my mom won't let me call him by his first name either.

I understand your mom. I think adults think it's a form of respect. I have a step-mom ans my dad wanted me to call her "mom". I asked if he was crazy. I already have a mom I didnt need another one. I think it's wrong that you have to call him "dad". He's not your father. Calling him "dad" or not doesnt mean you dont have respect for. "Mom" amd "Dad" are special words that only fit the poeple who helped brought us in this world.

My oldest son called my 2nd husband dad. And now my younger sons call my new husband dad. My husband's son calls me Mom. None of them have been told they have to call us Mom or Dad. Thats just something theyve done on their own. My husband and I have both told them that they dont have to call us mom or dad, and that thats a decision they have to make based on how they feel toward us. And yes, all of the birth parents are still somewhat involved in their lives. Its just that we have tried to make this a secure, loving family at home, and i think the kids have seen that. I think thats why they call us Mom and Dad.

I don't see why anyone would think it was weird. He's basically a dad to you, so why wouldn't you call him that?
