Can you select the gears? If you can't unless the engine's off, it could be a faulty brake switch.
If you can, but it just won't go... then it's a transmission issue for certain.
Next question... did you try your low gear(s)? Most people only try reverse and drive forgetting about 1,2, 3, or L.

Sounds like loss of pressure. Check your transmission fluid (automatic I presume). If it has plenty of ATF, it might have a clogged filter, bad torque converter, or a problem with the valve body. Troubleshoot in that order. If it's computer controlled, try to get a diagnostic before tearing into the tranny.

Most likely causes:
1) Linkage problem
2) low or no fluid due to leak or bad seals.
3) worn or damaged transmission.
Check the fluid level first...if brown or dirty you may have your answer. Also look for metal shavings in the fluid...it could indicate that mechanical repair is needed. If you are not mechanically inclined, take the vehicle to a reputable mechanic and they will diagnose what's needed.
Hope this helped.

Maybe your transmission fluid is at a extremely low level. Just check it if it is low you can fill it at your local gas station. If that's not the problem perhaps the meshing are worn out. You should get a mechanic to check it.

It feels like the linkage is somewhat out of line. they could disconnect and then reconnect this while they bumped off the tranny to interchange the grab. frequently a pair of steel rods or a steel cable is the linkage between the shifter and the tranny. sturdy success!
