Amusingly enough... The program itself is NOT illegal. Its stated intended use is for the sharing of authorized content. This would include anything that is not copyrighted, and therefore in the public domain, and not governed by any intellectual property laws. Downloading MP3s, as illegal as perhaps it should be, is also not illegal (I'm pretty sure...). Uploading MP3s, on the other hand, is. So... you can download MP3s that people are illegally sharing, but... having them, provided that you don't share them, isn't illegal. Same thing with making backup copies of MP3s from your CDs, which is what I would hope people are mostly doing, anyway, or downloading MP3s of songs they already own on a disc... just don't share those copies. So don't distribute it. And you're fine.

Technically the software and using it is not illegal. However using files that are copywrited without permission (usually means purchase) IS illegal and distributing those files is illegal.

If your conscious says you shouldn't have music or programs you didn't pay for, then do not use it.

If you are going to use it, there is some risk though minimal. At this point they are going after people with large libraries of files they are sharing. Keep your shared directory small and it should be less of a risk.

These days I'm finding the the owners of material are getting smart and putting a lot of trojans and viruses in the files. It's getting very hard to get programs (software) that is clean. It happens with the music too, though to a lesser degree.

Limewire in and of itself is not illegal. However, sharing copyrighted files by using Limewire is. I am more of a kazaa man myself. I do believe the 'illegal' or 'forbidden' element is what makes it so cool and so darn addictive - Long Live Filesharing!

The program itself isn't illegal. It is illegal to download and share music that you aren't paying for. But so many people do it that they don't spend the time and money catching them all. My advice is that if you download music you should make sure to move your downloads out of your shared file because the only way you can get prosecuted is if you are sharing tons of files.

Yes limewire is illegal because you are downloading songs without paying. Limewire is also a site and they arent aloud to let out users names. So techniclly you cant get caught.

I don't think the program itself is illegal - I think posessing stolen material such as music, music videos, and movies is the illegal part of it. The program was just made as a file-sharing program - not a program for theft.

My answer: the program is not illegal.

Any file sharing service that is free is illegal. The government just can't shut it down for certain reason's. The companies are able to get around it.

Well you shouldn't use it because it causes a lot of viruses. About being illegal, nothing is illegal unless you get caught.
